Missions remain in playoff contention after tough weekend

The San Antonio Missions baseball team remains in the playoff contention despite a challenging weekend. The Missions, currently sitting at 23-28, are in last place in the Texas League South, but they are just five games behind division leader Amarillo with 18 regular season games remaining. Missions manager Chris Tremie expressed optimism about the team's chances in the postseason, acknowledging that it will require significant effort to secure a spot in the playoffs.

Following a strong start with three one-run victories during the first half of their home series against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, the Missions saw their performance deteriorate in the following three days, resulting in a split of the remaining six games. The team's offensive struggles and pitching inconsistencies were highlighted as key factors in their recent setbacks.

Outfielder Alex McCoy, who joined the Missions from High-A Fort Wayne on August 14, has been a bright spot for the team, hitting a walk-off single in the 11th inning of a close game to secure a 6-5 victory. Tremie praised McCoy's impressive performance, emphasizing the challenge of transitioning from A-ball to Double-A, where the level of competition is notably higher due to the presence of more experienced players.

As the Missions prepare to continue their road trip, they face the Springfield Cardinals, the Double-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, in a six-game series starting on Tuesday night.
