Government tips Malkia Strikers to shine in African Championships in Nairobi.

The Kenyan government has expressed confidence in the Malkia Strikers, the reigning African champions in women's volleyball, to secure victory and retain their title at the upcoming 2026 CAVB Women's National Volleyball Championship. Scheduled to take place at Kasarani Indoor Arena and Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi from August 25 to September 5, this is the first time Kenya has hosted the event in 11 years.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Cabinet Secretary for Sports Salim Mvuyra stated that a continental win would not only bring glory to the team but also qualify them for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games and the World Championships in 2027. "We cannot afford to lose this competition," the CS emphasized.

The government is committed to supporting the players' development and ensuring sports becomes a lucrative industry. A new sports policy is being formulated to accelerate commercialization, aiming to boost players' talents and create more employment opportunities.

KVF president Nyaberi praised the Ministry for its continued support in talent development and highlighted that the championship represents a significant milestone for Kenya's tourism and hospitality industry. Malkia Strikers head coach Geoffrey Omondi and captain Meldina Sande expressed their eagerness to defend their title, while urging the CS to provide them with adequate rewards and invite the President to witness their homecoming triumph.
