MATAR joins United for Wildlife to strengthen action against illegal wildlife trade

Doha, Qatar: Qatar's MATAR, a subsidiary of Qatar Airways Group, has joined United for Wildlife's Transport Taskforce to bolster efforts against illicit wildlife trade at Hamad International Airport (HIA). The Qatar Company for Airports Operation and Management (MATAR) signed the Buckingham Palace Declaration, committing to prevent the transport of illegal wildlife and wildlife products.

The declaration outlines a framework for transport organizations to improve awareness, training, reporting, and cooperation with authorities. This helps identify and respond to trafficking risks more effectively. MATAR's involvement complements existing measures at HIA and aligns with Qatar Airways Group's Environmental Sustainability Policy, which enforces a zero-tolerance stance on illegal wildlife trafficking.

MATAR's participation impacts over 14,000 employees at Qatar Airways Group, who have completed specialized training to recognize and report potential indicators of illegal wildlife trafficking. Passenger awareness materials at HIA emphasize the risks associated with illegal wildlife trafficking. As a signatory, MATAR will enhance reporting procedures, increase employee awareness, and expand relevant training across the airport community.

MATAR, as part of Qatar Airways Group, supports the Taskforce's efforts to improve awareness, information sharing, and reporting across the transport sector. With the Transport Taskforce celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2026, it unites airports, airlines, shipping companies, freight organizations, law enforcement agencies, and other partners to combat illegal wildlife trade.
