Man jailed three months, fined RM400 for impersonating MACC officer

An unemployed Malaysian man, Mohd Izham Mohd Zainuddin, has been sentenced to three months in jail and fined RM400 for impersonating a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer, according to the Selayang magistrate's court in Kuala Lumpur.

The 34-year-old Izham pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced by magistrate Chai Guan Hock. The court also imposed an additional month in jail if he fails to pay the fine. Izham was found guilty of falsely introducing himself as an MACC officer and showing a work pass bearing the commission's logo to a 69-year-old man, despite having no official association with the public service. This act occurred at a residence in Taman Selasih Phase 2, Batu Caves, Selangor, under the Penal Code's Section 171.

Separately, Izham was also charged with cheating a 55-year-old woman of RM31,500 by deceiving her into handing over the money to purchase a plot of land in Kampung Muhibah Utama, Sungai Tinggi, Hulu Selangor. The alleged offence took place between June 2 and 22 at Lot 211, Jalan Besar Selayang Indah, Batu Caves. This violation falls under Section 420 of the Penal Code and carries a potential jail term ranging from one to ten years, along with a fine and whipping upon conviction.

The court denied Izham bail and set November 17 for the next mention. The prosecution was handled by deputy public prosecutor Birr Zamier Abu Bakar, while Izham was unrepresented during the proceedings.
