Lagos mourns veteran actor Taiwo Hassan ‘Ogogo’

The Lagos State Government has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of veteran Nollywood actor, Taiwo Hassan, affectionately known as Ogogo. Described as a cultural icon and an ambassador of Yoruba heritage, the state Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture conveyed its condolences to the actor’s family, friends, colleagues, and the broader Nollywood and creative arts community.

In a statement on Sunday, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, emphasized that Hassan's impact extended far beyond his acting career. "Taiwo Hassan was more than an actor. He was a custodian of culture, a gifted storyteller, and a proud ambassador of Yoruba heritage," she stated. Benson-Awoyinka highlighted that the late actor entertained multiple generations while simultaneously preserving and showcasing Yoruba cultural values through his work on stage and screen.

Tragically, his life was cut short, even though the entertainment world mourns the loss. A video clip that went viral showed Nollywood actor Ijebu urging for forgiveness following Ogogo's demise. "He dedicated many years to the promotion of Yoruba culture, theatre, and the entertainment industry. His contributions to the creative sector helped shape the cultural landscape of Lagos State and Nigeria, leaving a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come," added Benson-Awoyinka.

The commissioner conveyed the ministry's shared grief with Hassan's family and the creative community, describing his death as a significant loss to both cultural and entertainment sectors. "We pray that Almighty God grants his soul eternal rest and gives his family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones the strength and fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss," she concluded.

Ogogo's death, attributed to cancer, was mourned nationwide, with tributes pouring in from Nigerians including celebrities and political figures. The actor, a leading voice in Yoruba-language Nollywood, passed away after his daughters publicly pleaded for medical help as he fought stage-four cancer.
