Klay Thompson joins Heat, set to team up alongside newly acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo

MIAMI (AP) — Klay Thompson has finalized a two-year deal worth about $11.5 million with the Miami Heat, who eagerly awaited the opportunity to add the sharpshooter to their revamped roster. The deal makes sense for both sides, as Thompson's love for water and boating aligns well with the Heat's home games taking place near Biscayne Bay.

Additionally, Thompson's Bahamian heritage and the island nation's proximity to Miami, along with a significant fan base, further solidify the fit. Thompson, a 36-year-old entering his 14th NBA season (excluding two missed due to injury), is a career 41% three-point shooter, and last year marked the 11th time he surpassed 200 three-pointers in a season.

The Heat have only seen seven players achieve this feat in their history. Known for his high winning pedigree, Thompson once teamed up with Stephen Curry to form the Golden State Warriors' "Splash Brothers" duo, leading them to four NBA championships. He is a five-time All-Star, holds the league record for most made three-pointers in a game (14), and has connected on at least ten three-pointers in a game nine times.

Currently, Thompson trails Ray Allen, a former Heat guard, by only 74 three-pointers on the league's all-time list. This is the latest significant move for the Heat this summer, following their acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from Milwaukee, and the signing of Tim Hardaway Jr. Thompson's contract buyout from the Dallas Mavericks was finalized Friday, ending his two-year tenure with the team.
