Kit Harington joins HBO's Harry Potter series as Gilderoy Lockhart

Kit Harington has been confirmed to take on the role of Gilderoy Lockhart in the second season of HBO's Harry Potter series. The move comes after Nicholas Hoult departed the production, a decision rooted in scheduling conflicts rather than any creative disagreement. While some fans may be disappointed by the change, Harington's casting injects a level of experience into the role.

In fact, Harington has already delved into the character's psyche through his work on the Audible's Harry Potter audiobook series, lending his voice to Lockhart in the process.

Lockhart first graced the big screen in the 2002 adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, portrayed by Kenneth Branagh. Harington now has the opportunity to infuse his own theatrical flair into one of the franchise's most iconic and self-absorbed characters. The young cast of Season 2 remains strong, featuring Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

They are supported by a seasoned ensemble, including John Lithgow as headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as groundskeeper Rubeus Hagrid.

Season 2 is set to begin filming this fall, just as Season 1 prepares for its Christmas Day premiere on HBO and HBO Max. Behind the scenes, there have been some changes as well. Jon Brown, the writer of Season 1, has been promoted to co-showrunner alongside series developer Francesca Gardiner. Mark Mylod, known for his work on high-profile television productions, will take up the director's chair.

Season 2 is anticipated to begin filming this fall, giving Harington ample time to fully embrace the larger-than-life persona of Lockhart.

Anticipation for Season 1 remains high, with the series premiering on HBO and HBO Max this Christmas Day, bringing the magical world of Hogwarts to life on the small screen for the first time. The HBO reboot of Harry Potter has already faced an early shake-up, as the star of Ginny Weasley departed before the series even aired. Daniel Radcliffe has weighed in on the franchise, ranking the films and stating that "The Half-Blood Prince" is at the bottom of the bracket.
