Kano trade zone generates N36bn, creates N5,000 jobs

The Kano Free Trade Zone has generated over N36 billion in customs revenue and created between 3,000 to 5,000 direct jobs between January and August 2026, according to Solomon Matthew, the Zone's Director. The Zone, covering 262,000 hectares, accommodates 87 operational enterprises involved in manufacturing, processing, and trading.

Matthew emphasized the Zone's role in promoting local manufacturing and attracting Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs). The Zone has also prioritized technology transfer, local manufacturing, and foreign investment into Nigeria. Richard Bassey, the Deputy Director, revealed that the revenue from January to August 2026 increased from over N24 billion in the previous year, partly due to better collaboration between the Zone's management and the Nigeria Customs Service.

The Zone also introduced an inventory procedure to ensure that manufacturers pay duties only on raw materials actually used in production, excluding waste. The Nigeria Customs Service reported a revenue of about N40 billion since January 2026, reflecting a steady increase from 39 billion naira. Customs operations within the Zone are guided by principles of compliance, trade facilitation, and accountability.
