Japanese lawmakers travel to Beijing, seeking to mend ties after Takaichi’s Taiwan remark fallout

A group of Japanese lawmakers, including one from Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's governing party, traveled to Beijing on Monday to meet with Chinese officials. This meeting takes place for the first time since tensions between the two Asian nations escalated following Takaichi's comment on Taiwan that angered China. The lawmakers from Takaichi's Liberal Democratic Party and opposition parties, Komeito and the Centrist Reform Alliance, aim to mend strained ties as economic disruptions have ensued.

Shinichi Isa, a top spokesperson for the CRA party and former Japanese diplomat at the Embassy in China, expressed hope that communication can be reestablished during their visit. Tensions have reached their worst levels since the 1972 normalization of relations, with Chinese Communist Party officials stating that bilateral ties have plummeted to their lowest point since then.
