IPFS Maintainers Winding Down

IPFS developers are ending their work on Shipyard, a software platform they depend on for their operations. Protocol Labs, the organization that funds Shipyard, has decided not to renew this funding. As a result, Shipyard's IPFS-related engineering, maintenance, and infrastructure work will cease on September 30, 2026.

Over the past three years, Shipyard has contributed to shaping the modern IPFS ecosystem, introducing features like simpler HTTP-native implementations, resilient content routing, support for large SHA-256 objects, and anonymity through Tor and onion services. The team is disappointed by this outcome but aims to ensure the IPFS ecosystem remains in the best position possible for the future.

The team will remain available through the end of September to assist with the transition and answer any questions. They encourage any users, maintainers, or contributors to reach out and share their experiences or ideas. IPFS tools and integrations have been used by over 75 million monthly active users worldwide. Despite the end of this chapter, the team remains proud of their accomplishments and hopes their work will provide a strong foundation for IPFS's future.
