IPFS Maintainers Winding Down

IPFS developers announce they will be winding down their involvement with the IPFS project after their funding is no longer being renewed by Protocol Labs. The team, known as Shipyard, will cease their IPFS-related engineering, maintenance, and infrastructure operations on September 30, 2026. Over the past three years, they have contributed significantly to the IPFS ecosystem, including delivering simpler HTTP-native implementations, resilient content routing, support for large objects, pseudonymous hosting through Tor, and many other advancements.

While this means they will not see their efforts through to completion, they aim to leave the IPFS ecosystem in a strong position for whatever comes next. They will remain available until the end of September to assist with the transition, answering questions, providing context, and helping with the smoothest possible transition. They encourage anyone who has interacted with their work to reach out.

The team expresses their gratitude to all contributors, reviewers, issue filers, testers, infrastructure runners, standard participants, and believers in IPFS's "content should be addressed by what it is rather than where it lives" philosophy. They hope the work they've done will provide a strong foundation for the project's future. Over 75 million monthly active users globally have benefited from their free IPFS tools and integrations.
