India security chief Ajit Doval visits China for border talks

Top Indian security official Ajit Doval landed in Beijing on Monday to discuss their shared Himalayan border with China, ahead of a BRICS summit in September. Doval, India's National Security Advisor and Special Representative on the India-China Boundary Question, is set to meet Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi for talks on Tuesday.

Additionally, he will also meet China's Vice President Han Zheng during his two-day visit. The two nations have engaged in multiple discussions regarding their contentious border since a deadly clash in 2020. According to the Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, the talks will focus on in-depth communication and joint efforts to ensure peace and stability in the border regions, in line with the consensus shared by the leaders of both countries.

Their shared 3,500-kilometre border is a significant point of contention between India and China. The BRICS leaders' meeting, scheduled for September 12-13 in New Delhi, will also cover topics such as Middle East affairs, global trade, and the evolving global order.
