Hong Kong airport embraces future of travel with Terminal 2

In a groundbreaking transformation, Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) unveiled the revamped Terminal 2 (T2) to enhance the travel experience for passengers. Completed on schedule and on budget in November 2024, the new terminal is part of the airport's three-runway system, which is expected to increase the airport's capacity by a staggering 50% to accommodate 120 million passengers annually.

Upon entering the terminal, visitors are greeted with a feather-shaped roof that creates a canopy-like effect, suspending slender "tree columns" on inclined bases that barely touch the ground. This innovative design allows abundant natural light to illuminate the space while reducing the reliance on artificial lighting, creating a serene and uplifting atmosphere.

The layout and technology of T2 have been meticulously optimized to minimize passenger wait times. A key feature is the self bag-drop machines, each equipped with 10 artificial intelligence cameras that process baggage in just 45 seconds. Additionally, ultra-low platforms facilitate easy luggage placement on the conveyor belts, further streamlining the process.

Security gates are strategically positioned in the middle of the hall, allowing passengers with carry-on baggage to reach the airside area in just two and a half minutes from their taxi drop-off point.

HKIA's commitment to innovation is evident in the facial recognition technology that has replaced traditional passport and boarding pass checks at every security gate. Furthermore, LED screens with ocean-themed displays line the escalators, providing a calming visual experience for passengers as they navigate the terminal. Jacqueline Chak, a former employee of the architecture firm Foster + Partners, which designed HKIA's original Terminal 1, remarks that T2 successfully carries the spirit of T1 while offering a refreshed and youthful ambiance.
