H1N1 on the rise! 54% of Delhi-NCR households battle flu-like symptoms this season, finds survey

A recent survey in Delhi-NCR found that nearly 54% of households have members dealing with flu-like symptoms, as H1N1 cases increase. Based on 32,000 responses from Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad, the Local Circles report indicates that 23% of surveyed households have four or more people affected. Around 16% reported two to three symptomatic members and 15% had one individual with flu-like fever.

This suggests ongoing transmission within homes, with 39% of households surveyed having two or more members affected at the same time. Delhi recorded 159 new influenza cases on August 20, with 114 being H1N1 cases. This year, Delhi has seen 2,392 influenza-A cases and 1,777 swine flu cases, with H1N1 being the most common strain.

While the official count only includes those who sought medical help, many people who recovered at home are not counted. Scientists at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) stated on Sunday that there is no new strain of Influenza A (H1N1) in the country, emphasizing that the current viruses are similar to the A/Missouri/11/2025 (H1N1) pdm09-like strain.

No cause for panic is advised, as the seasonal influenza is mostly self-limiting and most people recover with proper care and rest. Young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health issues are at higher risk.
