Government seizes GH¢6.9m, $440,000 linked to suspected drug traffickers

According to Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the government has seized approximately GH¢6.9 million and $440,000 in cash that are linked to individuals suspected of involvement in illicit drug trafficking. This move was disclosed during his appearance at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 24.

The minister emphasized that the action is part of an intelligence-led campaign aimed at targeting the financial networks and assets of suspected drug traffickers, going beyond the arrest of users and distributors. "Our campaign is not just [targeted] at the users, but those who are bringing it," he stated.

Mohammed-Mubarak explained that security agencies will continue to pursue suspected traffickers and freeze their assets while the prosecution is ongoing. "When we get them, we seize their assets, or we taint their assets, freezing them while the prosecution is going on," he added.

During the review period, 73 assets connected to suspected drug-related activities have been identified. Additionally, about 19 kilograms of gold were seized in cases related to suspected drug money laundering. The minister noted that the seized cash, associated with individuals involved in drug trafficking, amounts to about GH¢6.9 million and $440,000.

The government's strategy, according to Mohammed-Mubarak, involves disrupting the financial infrastructure that supports the illicit drug trade. He reported that between January 2025 and July 2026, security agencies seized over 8,500 kilograms of narcotic drugs and approximately 45.4 million tramadol tablets. A total of 217 arrests were made, and 165 prosecutions were initiated as part of the intensified campaign against drug trafficking and abuse.
