Ghana moves to strengthen workplace safety laws with new bill

Ghana's government is drafting a new law aimed at bolstering workplace safety, health, and working conditions, according to Dr Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, the Minister for Employment, Labour and Jobs. The proposed legislation will create a robust legal framework to regulate workplace safety and health, setting out standards to safeguard workers throughout the nation.

Speaking at an engagement with members of the Health, Environment, Safety and Security (HESS) ahead of their leadership conference, Dr Pelpuo emphasized that protecting workers from hazardous conditions is crucial for Ghana's economic growth, as a healthy workforce is vital for maintaining productivity and development. He stressed that workers should not suffer from illnesses or health issues stemming from their work environments.

The Minister highlighted that economic growth cannot be sustained without providing employees with safe and effective working conditions. Since coming into office, the government has prioritized creating a secure and positive work environment to boost workers' wellbeing and productivity. Dr Pelpuo commended HESS for its efforts in promoting occupational safety, health, and security, noting that the organization's work is a significant contribution to national development.

He assured HESS that the government is eager to work with stakeholders to enhance workplace safety standards and strengthen measures to protect workers. The Minister expressed confidence that the upcoming HESS leadership conference would yield practical recommendations to further improve occupational safety, health, and security in Ghana.

He stressed that ensuring workers have access to safe, peaceful, and secure workplaces is essential for acknowledging their role in the country's development and fostering a resilient and sustainable economy.
