Ford to hold news conference amid trade war with U.S.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford plans to address the media on Monday afternoon in Hamilton following his weekend call for a robust response to new U.S. tariffs on Canadian exports. These tariffs, valued at billions of dollars, took effect just before crucial trade talks between the two nations were suspended. Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who had been quiet during the intensifying trade negotiations, broke his silence on Friday night and urged the country's premiers to present a united front against the U.S. measures.

Prime Minister Mark Carney, however, suspended the talks, citing unacceptable terms such as restrictions on Canada's ability to sign deals with other countries and demands to restrict language and cultural protections. Ford commended Carney's decision and is now urging the premiers to stand together in the face of the new 50 per cent tariffs on $28 billions of Canadian exports.

In response, Ottawa plans to match the U.S. tariffs dollar-for-dollar after Labour Day, targeting various sectors like steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, and electronics.
