Ford government celebrates construction work on northern Ontario mining roads

The Ford government in Ontario has officially kicked off construction on roads in a remote, mineral-rich region known as the Ring of Fire. This development is part of the government's strategy to open up the area for mining operations. The initiative, unveiled on Monday, involves the construction of the Anaconda and Painter Lake roads, as part of a larger network in the region.

Premier Doug Ford announced that this move could unlock $22 billion in economic potential and create 70,000 well-paying jobs. The Premier also expressed gratitude towards Chief Sonny Gagnon and the members of Aroland First Nation for their collaboration in advancing community access and supporting Ontario workers. The Ford government has been striving to create an all-season road to the Ring of Fire since its election in 2018.

The province, rich in critical minerals necessary for various modern technologies, aims to make the area economically self-sufficient and appealing to potential mining partners, particularly from the United States. The construction with Aroland First Nation is now five years ahead of schedule, according to the government. Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation, highlighted the historic investments being made in Ontario's highway network to facilitate access to the Ring of Fire while supporting economic opportunities for First Nations in northern Ontario.
