DP leader orders launch of task force to promote political unity

SEOUL, Aug. 24 (Yonhap) — Party chief Kim Min-seok announced Monday the formation of a task force aimed at fostering greater political unity and expanding cooperation with other parties. Speaking at a supreme council meeting, Kim emphasized the task force, which will operate under his authority, will lead a comprehensive effort to enhance ties across political factions.

"We will construct an unbreakable bridge of dialogue with the main opposition People Power Party, and a bridge of political solidarity for the future with progressive and liberal parties," Kim stated. The task force, led by four-term DP lawmaker Park Beom-kye, is set to be instrumental in this endeavor. This development raises speculation about Kim's intentions to rekindle efforts to unite with the minor Rebuilding Korea Party, an initiative previously attempted under a prior DP leader but ultimately unsuccessful.

Additionally, Kim announced the establishment of another task force dedicated to examining issues that arose during the DP's recent leadership election and proposing amendments to the party's electoral procedures. The latter task force will primarily comprise external experts.
