Commanders trim running back room with the release of one veteran

The Washington Commanders have reduced their running back roster by releasing fifth-year veteran Jerome Ford. Ford suffered a hamstring injury during the preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins, leading to his placement on the reserve/injured list. Following this, it was expected that Ford and the Commanders would reach an injury settlement, allowing him to sign with another team upon his recovery.

Washington has now officially released Ford, removing him from the roster. According to Martenzie Johnson of NOTUS, the Commanders released RB Jerome Ford on August 23, 2026. This move was anticipated, as even if Ford had remained healthy, he faced slim odds of making the 53-man roster. The team already has locks in Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Rachaad White, and rookie sixth-round pick Kaytron Allen.

Veteran Jeremy McNichols is the leading contender for the final spot, while undrafted rookie Robert Henry Jr. is also in the running. Henry had an impressive performance in the preseason opener but struggled during Saturday's game against the Lions. Currently sidelined with a quad injury, McNichols is a familiar figure to Washington, given his experience and role on the team.
