China Abruptly Postpones Ambitious Chang’e-7 Lunar Mission Launch

China has announced a surprising decision to postpone its highly anticipated Chang’e-7 lunar mission. The mission, which was set to explore the moon’s south pole and search for water ice, was originally scheduled to launch from the Wenchang Space Launch Site on China’s Hainan Island. However, the China Manned Space Agency has cited a "comprehensive assessment" and determined that the mission cannot proceed during the planned window this year.

The agency emphasized its commitment to "prudence, reliability, and absolute mission success" in making the decision. The Chang’e-7 mission, the seventh in the Chang’e moon exploration program, aimed to make significant technological advancements by studying permanently shadowed craters on the lunar surface and conducting environmental and resource surveys of the moon's south pole.

The mission's preparations had been underway at the Wenchang launch site for several weeks. This postponement comes after the successful return of the Chang’e-6 probe in 2024, which brought back rock and soil samples from the far side of the moon, marking a historic first.
