Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh reveals front-runner for starting left guard

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh announced that veteran offensive lineman Kayode Awosika is leading the competition for the starting left guard position. The coach stated, "Kayode Awosika is right there. He's the leader right now." Additionally, Harbaugh revealed that rookie Jake Slaughter, who was previously in contention for the left guard role, will now serve as the starting center.

The battle for the starting left guard spot has been a focal point during training camp. Prior to Tyler Biadasz's injury, five offensive linemen were vying for the position, including Slaughter, Trey Pipkins III, Trevor Penning, Brandon Taylor and Awosika. With Slaughter confirmed as the starting center, Awosika appears to be the frontrunner, with just over three weeks remaining until the start of the season.

Trey Penning, Trevor Penning and Pipkins continue to be part of the mix, receiving additional reps and providing veteran depth, but none have managed to unseat Awosika from the top position. Awosika is set to begin his first season with the Chargers after spending time with the Eagles and the Lions. The team acquired Awosika's services through a one-year, $2 million deal signed in late March 2026.

The Chargers obtained Awosika from the Lions, who had signed him in 2021 following his undrafted status out of Buffalo. The 27-year-old has participated in 50 games thus far in his career, with only 11 starts to his name. In 2025, Awosika earned an overall grade of 57.9 and appeared in 287 offensive snaps. During that period, he recorded 10 total pressures in pass protection, which included three sacks and one hit allowed to opposing pass rushers.
