Bhiwandi ST Depot Turns Into Pool As Monsoon Exposes Years-Old Drainage Woes

Bhiwandi, August 24, 2026: The Bhiwandi State Transport depot has become a waterlogged mess due to monsoon rains, leaving commuters struggling to navigate through dirty water and slush. The drainage system has remained non-functional for years, causing rainwater to accumulate within the premises. The state government has floated a tender to demolish the nearly 65-year-old depot building and rebuild it, while a temporary depot is also planned.

However, immediate actions are needed to address the ongoing waterlogging until the redevelopment work is completed. Passengers, especially schoolchildren, women, senior citizens, and daily commuters, are facing difficulties while moving through the waterlogged area. Buses passing through the water splash dirty water onto pedestrians, further aggravating the situation.

A local resident, Taj Khan, emphasized the need for immediate drainage, clean-up, and sanitation measures. The ST depot manager, Keshav Mahajan, admitted that permanent repairs to the drainage system are not feasible due to the building's dilapidated condition. The depot serves thousands of commuters daily, with around 80 trips to Kalyan and 50 trips to Thane conducted every day.

However, limited direct connectivity to Borivali, with only one bus operating on the route, has also been a concern.
