Approval for cosmetic product containing scheduled poison revoked

The Malaysian health ministry has withdrawn the notification for the cosmetic product Remy Laure Soothing Cream following its discovery to contain hydroquinone, a controlled substance. This decision means the product can no longer be sold in the country. According to the ministry, hydroquinone-laden substances are classified as medications and must be registered with the Drug Control Authority prior to market availability.

Unauthorized usage of such medicines could induce side effects, such as skin color alterations and sensitivity. The ministry's statement further elucidates that the sale and distribution of the cosmetic item breached the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984. In Malaysia, first-time offenders could face a fine of up to RM25,000 or imprisonment for up to three years, while repeat offenders may be fined up to RM50,000 or up to five years behind bars.

Companies found guilty could be penalized RM50,000 for a first offense and up to RM100,000 for subsequent violations. The health ministry has urged the public to cease using the product immediately and consult a healthcare professional if they experience any discomfort or adverse reactions. It also suggested that the public verify the notification status of cosmetic products on the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency's website (www.npra.gov.my).
