Approval for cosmetic product containing scheduled poison revoked

The health ministry has withdrawn authorization for the Remy Laure Soothing Cream due to its composition containing hydroquinone, a controlled substance. The Ministry's Pharmaceutical Services Programme Director's decision leads to the product's prohibition from being sold in Malaysia. Hydroquinone, classified as a medicine, requires registration with the Drug Control Authority before it can be marketed; unsupervised use may result in undesirable skin color changes and hypersensitivity.

The sale and distribution of this cosmetic item breach the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984. Under the regulations, first-time offenders might face a fine up to RM25,000 or imprisonment for up to three years; subsequent offenses could lead to fines up to RM50,000 or imprisonment for up to five years. Companies can be fined up to RM50,000 for a first offense and up to RM100,000 for subsequent violations.

The ministry urges the public to cease using the product immediately and consult a healthcare professional if experiencing any discomfort or adverse effects. The public is also encouraged to verify the notification status of cosmetic products on the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency's website, www.npra.gov.my.
