Alleged extortion: We're assessing petition against Afenyo-Markin - OSP

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has acknowledged allegations of extortion and related conduct lodged by Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of Ghana Gold Board, against Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader of Parliament. The OSP has also taken note of two joint petitions and two separate petitions submitted by individuals in connection with the allegations.

The OSP will evaluate the case to determine if it falls within its jurisdiction and if further investigation is required. This move follows Gyamfi's claim that Afenyo-Markin extorted GH¢22 billion (approximately US$1.7 billion) from the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme in 2025. Afenyo-Markin has denied the allegation and stated that he plans to pursue legal action against Gyamfi.

The controversy has arisen from a public dispute between the two leaders regarding the alleged losses linked to the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme. The United Party has submitted a petition to the Attorney-General and other anti-corruption and security agencies to investigate the allegations of extortion against Afenyo-Markin.

The petition was filed by the party's Communications Director, Solomon Owusu, and Legal Director, Andrew Appiah-Danquah.
