Alabama football 5-star defensive back out with arm injury

Alabama football will be without a five-star freshman at the beginning of 2026, according to the school's Name, Image and Likeness entity. Jireh Edwards, a highly-rated safety in the incoming class, will undergo surgery on Monday, August 24 to address a right arm injury. While the injury is not expected to end his season, the extent of his playing time and role at the start of the season remains uncertain.

Kane Wommack, a spokesperson for the program, acknowledged these as significant questions the team will face. Edwards, who stands 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 218 pounds, logged 92 tackles, 17 tackles-for-loss, six pass breakups, and three forced fumbles during his junior year at Saint Frances Academy in Maryland. Rated as the No. 33 player in the 2026 recruiting class by 247Sports composite rankings, Edwards has demonstrated resilience in overcoming this setback.
