A young navigator, 4 warships and an epic journey home

In 1973, Danyal Balagopal Abdullah, a 22-year-old officer aboard the KD Ganyang, was entrusted with navigating a group of four newly acquired Royal Malaysian Navy warships from France to Malaysia. Together with 170 other personnel, the crews were tasked with delivering KD Perdana, KD Ganas, KD Ganyang, and KD Serang home after months of training in France.

The squadron left Cherbourg on May 5, 1973, but faced numerous challenges, including rough seas, breakdowns, and a major detour around Africa. They eventually completed the approximately 12,000-nautical-mile journey, docking at the Malaysian Base Jetty in Woodlands, Singapore on July 1, 1973, in time for the navy's ship parade. Notably, four crew members later rose to become navy chiefs, with one later also serving as chief of the defence forces.

The journey tested the crews' resolve and endurance, with the ships making 14 port calls along the way to replenish supplies. Despite the hardships, the squadron successfully completed the mission, with the vessels still in service today, though repurposed as patrol vessels.
