A young navigator, 4 warships and an epic journey home

In 1973, four Royal Malaysian Navy warships embarked on a 12,000-nautical-mile journey from France to Malaysia, navigating crew Danyal Balagopal Abdullah and 170 others. The mission, fraught with challenges, saw the Perdana-class vessels, KD Perdana, KD Ganas, KD Ganyang, and KD Serang, travel from Cherbourg to Malaysia. The crews had spent months in France learning to operate the ships before setting sail.

The voyage began with a detour around Africa due to the Suez Canal closure, exposing the ships to harsh conditions and mechanical issues. The trip was marked by strong winds, rough seas, and a steering-system failure, but the crews persevered. They made 14 port calls to restock supplies before finally docking in Penang, Klang, and Woodlands, Singapore on July 1, 1973.

Four crew members would later become navy chiefs, making the journey a defining moment in their careers. Today, the four ships still serve as patrol vessels, a testament to the resilience and determination of the young sailors who navigated them home.
