3 DEs try out for 49ers as team gets desperate before preseason finale

The San Francisco 49ers worked out three defensive ends on Sunday in an effort to address the position's issues in training camp, according to the NFL transaction wire. The team attempted to sign Diwun Black, Villami Fehoko, and Ron Stone. With key players Nick Bosa and Romello Height absent from the session, the 49ers are significantly lacking depth at defensive end, a position that has seen little stability throughout the camp.

The 49ers have a couple more practices and a preseason game before final cuts on August 30, so an additional defensive end could be beneficial, particularly if Height's injury forces him out of practice and the preseason finale. Black, an undrafted rookie from Temple University, had only 15.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks in two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens.

Fehoko, who joined the Dallas Cowboys in 2023, has played in six preseason games, contributing six pressures with no sacks during his tenure with the Cowboys and Washington Commanders. Stone, the most experienced of the three, spent six seasons at Washington State University, tallying 200 tackles, 31.5 tackles for loss, and 16 sacks in 56 games.

While it is unlikely any of these three players will make the 49ers' 53-man roster, they are relatively young and hold potential upside that could see them land on the practice squad if they perform well.
