Women aspirants condemn political violence ahead of 2027 polls

Women seeking political office in the Mt Kenya region have voiced concerns over violence and unfair processes that could hinder their chances of being elected in the 2027 polls. The Social Justice League's Judith Juma warned that intimidation, harassment, and the high costs associated with political campaigns could deter women from running for office. Speaking to young women candidates in Kirinyaga County, Juma emphasized the need for a more equitable political environment where women can compete without fear.

Juma called on political parties to implement the constitutional two-thirds gender principle and create practical opportunities for female candidates, such as transparent nominations and equal access to party platforms. She also urged the Government to strengthen mechanisms for reporting and addressing cases of political violence targeting women candidates.

Aspirants from various wards in Kirinyaga County, including Emily Mwaniki and Asunta Kiobe, echoed the concerns over the high cost of electoral processes and the use of intimidation during campaigns. Mwaniki criticized the financial barriers that prevent strong women leaders from competing on a level playing field and urged political parties to assess candidates based on their ability to serve their communities rather than their financial resources.

Kiobe emphasized the importance of rejecting violence and supporting peaceful elections, urging women to become champions of a culture of dialogue and issue-based politics.
