Russell defends Mercedes team orders against himself

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff defended the use of team orders in the Formula 1 championship battle following George Russell's protest over relinquishing second place to teammate Kimi Antonelli during the Dutch Grand Prix. Russell questioned the decision over the radio, stating it left him vulnerable to Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton.

However, Russell eventually agreed, acknowledging Antonelli "deserved to finish ahead." Wolff argued that not swapping positions would have left both drivers as targets for Hamilton, as the Ferraris had suffered significant time loss at the start of the year. The Mercedes boss emphasized that not swapping positions would have resulted in losing valuable race time and points.

Antonelli, who had previously been ahead of Russell, will face a penalty at his home Italian Grand Prix, potentially giving the 20-year-old a chance to secure a young driver's championship title.
