Kwara, federal fire agencies combat major fire disaster in Ilorin

On Sunday, firefighters from the Federal and Kwara fire agencies in Ilorin fought a major fire outbreak at a three-storey building with three-bedroom flats and 10 shops. According to Hassan Adekunle, spokesman for the State Fire Service, five shops were affected by the blaze. The incident occurred at 13:36hrs at Ita-Amodu, Niger Junction, Ilorin West Local Government Area.

The fire involved mattresses and highly combustible sofa materials, which contributed to its intensity and rapid spread. Upon arrival, the first fire appliance found the fire fully developed and overwhelming the building. A second fire appliance was immediately deployed to reinforce the firefighting operation. The firefighters showed remarkable courage, professionalism, and determination, working tirelessly to prevent the fire from spreading to adjoining properties.

Their efforts successfully brought the fire under control by 14:05hrs. Both agencies collaborated, significantly mitigating the impact and preventing further escalation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Chief Fire Officer Alabi Muhammed of the State Fire Service praised the bravery, resilience, and excellent teamwork of both fire agencies, particularly lauding the State Fire Service personnel for their quick response, effective reinforcement, and tireless efforts.

He urged owners of businesses dealing in combustible materials to prioritize fire safety measures, maintain spacing between combustible materials, and provide adequate fire extinguishing equipment.
