Punjab CM’s wife sends legal notice to ex-judge after NHRC asks state to probe his complaint

Dr Gurpreet Kaur, wife of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, recently issued a legal notice to retired Justice Ranjit Singh after the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) directed Punjab Chief Secretary and police chief to probe allegations made by Justice Singh. According to officials, Justice Singh claimed that Dr Gurpreet Kaur attempted to suppress a rape case in exchange for a bribe of Rs 5 crore.

However, when asked about the allegation, Justice Singh insisted he had not made any complaint to the NHRC or received any notice from Dr Gurpreet Kaur. The NHRC member, Priyank Kanoongo, stated that the Commission received a complaint from Justice Ranjit Singh alleging the attempted cover-up of a rape case. The NHRC has directed the Chief Secretary and DGP to investigate the allegation and submit an action taken report within two weeks.
