Panic as petrol tanker falls, causes obstruction on Anambra road

Panic erupted along the Onitsha-Owerri Road near the Army Checkpoint in Ihiala, Anambra State, on Sunday after a fully loaded petrol tanker overturned, blocking traffic and sparking fears of an explosion. The incident occurred around 2 pm and was attributed to a steering-system failure, causing the tanker to lose control and overturn. No casualties were reported, but authorities cordoned off the affected lane, diverting traffic and deploying the Anambra State Fire Service to prevent a potential fire outbreak.

Eyewitnesses reported that the driver attempted to navigate into a service lane but lost control of the vehicle. They distanced themselves as shop owners shut their businesses and motorists avoided the area due to concerns about a possible fire. The Anambra State Fire Service quickly dispatched firefighters and firefighting equipment to the scene to neutralize any ignition sources.

The Fire Service Head of Media and Publicity, Chukwudi Chiketa, confirmed the incident in a statement, stating that the tanker driver reportedly lost control due to a suspected steering-system failure.

Chiketa urged the public to remain calm and avoid actions that could expose them to danger, particularly around fallen fuel tankers. He emphasized the importance of proper vehicle maintenance, urging motorists to ensure critical components like braking, steering, and tyres are routinely inspected and serviced to prevent avoidable accidents. As the situation was under control, firefighters continued to manage the emergency, bringing it under control.
