Opposition Steps Up Attack On Bhagwant Mann Over ₹5 Crore Allegation In Rape Case

The BJP and other opposition parties are intensifying their attack on Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over allegations that his wife Gurpreet Kaur sought ₹5 crore to quash a rape case. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Punjab government and its Director General of Police, demanding a report within two weeks on the allegations.

The NHRC's proceedings indicate that the complaint stems from a former judge's alleged public claim that ₹5 crore was demanded in connection with a rape case involving Mann's wife. The Shiromani Akali Dal and the Congress have also called for Mann's resignation, adding pressure on the Aam Aadmi Party government ahead of the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections.

Mann's rival, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring of the Congress, demanded that he immediately clarify the allegations and explain the circumstances surrounding them. Gurpreet Kaur has filed a legal notice against former Punjab judge Justice Ranjit Singh, demanding an apology over the accusations. The AAP has dismissed the allegations as baseless, accusing the opposition of pursuing a political motive and emphasizing that Gurpreet Kaur's legal action indicates that the claims are being contested in court.
