Officials warn wildland firefighters about the risks of using a supplement for smoke exposure

Fire and medical officials have warned Western wildland firefighters about the potential dangers of using a supplement called glutathione to counteract toxic chemical exposure during intense blazes. Offered at a price of $205 plus GST for a year, with automatic renewal at a higher rate and a 10% discount, the supplement's safety and efficacy have been called into question by experts. Two pharmacies recalled the product in August due to bacterial contamination and reports of adverse symptoms.

This warning comes after the supplement was administered to firefighters during recent wildfires in Spokane, Washington, which resulted in widespread destruction. During briefings, medical professionals from California advised crews to inspect a tent run by a nonprofit of licensed naturopathic doctors offering glutathione. The nonprofit group, The Integrative Health Action Network, had previously given the supplement to firefighters during the 2025 Los Angeles County wildfires.

Despite lacking FDA approval, some firefighters claim the supplement alleviates symptoms of toxic smoke exposure, prompting some to urge California pharmacy officials not to limit access. However, physicians and IAFF members have raised concerns about health claims, citing a lack of research and potential adverse effects. Sean DeCrane, assistant to the general president for health and safety at the IAFF, emphasized the necessity of evaluating and testing medical treatments for firefighters to prevent unintended consequences.

In response to the safety advisory, the nonprofit acknowledged the need for peer-reviewed research on glutathione's effectiveness and is exploring partnerships to investigate its potential benefits. Experts, such as Dr. Cora Sack, a pulmonary specialist at the University of Washington School of Medicine, agree that anecdotal claims of relief are not conclusive evidence of the supplement's efficacy.

The widespread health impacts of wildfire smoke, particularly when it envelops urban areas and burns various materials, underscore the importance of understanding the risks associated with firefighting conditions.
