Budget 2027: Social Welfare Dept requests increase in RM500 caregiver assistance for bedridden patients

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 23 — The Social Welfare Department (JKM) has asked the Finance Ministry for a higher monthly allowance for caregivers of bedridden patients in Budget 2027. Currently, caregivers receive RM500 per month, but the department is requesting an increase to help alleviate the burden of caregiving. JKM Director-General Datuk Che Murad Sayang Ramjan said they would present this matter to the government, hoping for consideration.

The department also seeks additional funding to strengthen support for disadvantaged groups in society. Che Murad Sayang acknowledged the government's financial limitations but emphasized the importance of aiding those less fortunate. JKM volunteers play a crucial role in disaster assistance and serving as the government's "eyes and ears" in identifying community needs and challenges.

With 7,294 volunteers registered as of July 2026, the majority aged between 40 and 60, they complement government agencies in fulfilling their roles. JKM relies on these volunteers' efforts, as they often work without compensation and remain ready to assist when community challenges arise. The 2026 JKM Volunteer Convention serves as a platform for volunteers to share knowledge and experiences with related agencies and NGOs, aiming to enhance service delivery to target groups.

At the event, Che Murad Sayang honored outstanding volunteers and Community Inspiration Icon recipients for their commitment and contributions to society.
