Nobody knows who built AI coding model Ox Alpha or where the code goes

An anonymous provider has been offering free access to a powerful AI coding model called Ox Alpha since August 20th, with no company coming forward to claim responsibility for its creation. Listed on OpenRouter Inc., Ox Alpha is a frontier-class model that processes text, images, and video, but rejects audio requests. The model boasts an impressive context window of 1,048,576 tokens and output limited to 131,072 tokens.

OpenCode, an open-source terminal agent, advertised Ox Alpha's capacity as 100 trillion tokens per day, with rate limits that were near unlimited. OpenRouter informed users that the free access would be available until Monday, August 24th. Ox Alpha's context window and output cap make it a strong contender for reasoning systems in long-horizon software engineering and sustained agentic work.

Early evaluations, conducted by developer Ben Davis, showed Ox Alpha scoring above 80% on the DeepSWE software engineering benchmark, surpassing GPT-5.6-sol's 52% and Claude Fable 5's 65%. However, subsequent tests have suggested that Ox Alpha's performance is closer to GPT-5.6-sol's rather than significantly ahead. Despite the lack of a public leaderboard, usage of Ox Alpha has remained high, with coding tools like Claude Code pushing billions of tokens through the model since Thursday.

OpenRouter claims it is not the developer, owner, or operator of Ox Alpha and only routes requests to it. The mystery surrounding Ox Alpha's origin has led to speculation, including possible ties to Chinese AI developer Z.ai Co., but concrete evidence to confirm any specific lab's involvement remains elusive.
