Murkomen says new police strategy targets goons before rallies

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen praised the National Police Service for implementing an intelligence-led strategy to prevent violence at political rallies by identifying and arresting potential troublemakers before they reach the events. Murkomen commended the Inspector General of Police for the new approach, which allows security agencies to intervene early and stop disruptions.

Speaking on August 23, 2026, during the third Belgut Marathon in Kericho County, Murkomen assured Kenyans of the country's safety and the right to peaceful assembly. He urged political leaders to collaborate with security agencies and follow security advisories. Murkomen also called for accountability towards politicians who sponsor goonism and advised Kenyans not to attend rallies where violence is sponsored.

The remarks come as political mobilization intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election, with rallies and meetings held across the nation. Recent violence at political gatherings, such as the Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay County on August 16, 2026, which left two dead and several injured, has heightened concerns. Security agencies have increasingly relied on intelligence gathering and early intervention to prevent violence during political meetings.
