Middle East live: Iran's president says country facing 'many problems' as US sanctions loom

Tehran, Iran - Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has admitted that his nation is currently facing numerous challenges, including economic, military, and security issues, following the recent imposition of new sanctions by the United States. Speaking on state television, Pezeshkian expressed his understanding of the difficulties that Iranian citizens are currently experiencing. He stated, "We understand we have many problems in society right now. We are trying to prevent these as much as we can."

The US has vowed to bring about the collapse of the Iranian regime through a sanctions campaign, nearly six months after the start of their conflict. Pezeshkian attributed Iran's current predicament directly to US President Donald Trump, declaring, "Thanks to US President Donald Trump, Iran is in a full-scale economic, military and security war."

Iran has witnessed several waves of mass protests in recent years, often triggered by economic hardships such as inflation and fluctuations in exchange rates, leading to a decline in purchasing power. In December of last year, a protest movement initially sparked by the rising cost of living turned into nationwide demonstrations protesting against those in power.

Authorities reported over 3,000 deaths during the unrest, with the United States and Israel accused of orchestrating the violence. However, foreign-based non-governmental organizations (NGOs) claim that the authorities launched an indiscriminate crackdown, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people.

Despite the numerous challenges, Pezeshkian expressed his determination to overcome inflation, livelihood problems, unemployment, and to secure a better future for the Iranian people, so they can live with dignity and pride.
