Libaran MP says new settlement site being secured for 28 Pulau Nunuyan fire‑hit families

SANDAKAN, Aug 23 — Libaran MP Datuk Suhaimi Nasir is working towards finding a new settlement location for the 28 families who lost their homes in the recent fire at Kampung Pulau Nunuyan Laut, he said after visiting the victims on Saturday. Discussions are ongoing with the State Lands and Surveys Department to pinpoint appropriate government land nearby, with the hope of finalizing the arrangement within a month.

Suhaimi, who leads Risda Holdings, emphasized that the affected families cannot rebuild on their original site as the land is owned by someone else. Temporary housing has been considered since the evacuation center closed after three days of operation. The National Registration Department is supporting victims in retrieving their lost identification documents, while the PM’s Department’s Implementation Coordination Unit is aiding them in accessing aid such as e-Kasih.

Suhaimi also suggested setting up a volunteer fire brigade among the island community to enhance preparedness and provide immediate assistance in case of future fires until professional firefighters arrive.
