Libaran MP says new settlement site being secured for 28 Pulau Nunuyan fire‑hit families

SANDAKAN, Aug 23 — Libaran MP Datuk Suhaimi Nasir is working towards securing a new settlement site for the 28 families displaced by the recent fire at Kampung Pulau Nunuyan Laut. On Saturday, Suhaimi toured the affected families and discussed the possibility of identifying suitable government land near the area with the State Lands and Surveys Department.

He aims to resolve the land matter within a month, ensuring the land is allocated solely to the 28 impacted families if approved. Suhaimi, who also chairs Risda Holdings, emphasized that the previous site is no longer viable as the land belongs to another party, and temporary accommodation has been considered following the closure of the evacuation centre after three days of operation.

The National Registration Department is assisting victims in obtaining their identification cards and birth certificates, while the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department is aiding them in accessing necessary support, including e-Kasih. Suhaimi proposed the creation of a volunteer fire brigade among island residents to enhance emergency preparedness and provide an initial response to fires until firefighters arrive.
