Kalonzo defends Uhuru, says he has right to speak his mind

Kalonzo Musyoka, the leader of the Wiper Patriotic Front Party, has come to Uhuru Kenyatta's defense against criticisms from President William Ruto. Kalonzo spoke during a memorial service in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, on Sunday, August 23, 2026, for former Vice-President Michael Kijana Wamalwa. The Wiper leader emphasized that Uhuru Kenyatta has the right to express his views on political matters, especially after he stated that he has no interest in seeking political office himself.

Kalonzo stated, “Kwa sababu Uhuru ako na haki ya kuongea vile ameongea hapa bila kudhulumiwa, kwa sababu ameonyesha uongozi bwana. Amesema wazi hataki kiti chochote.”

Turning his attention to the upcoming 2027 General Election, Kalonzo declared that Ruto will only serve one term. He said, “Siku hizi ambazo zimesalia mia tatu hamsini na moja, kwamba huyu kiongozi ambaye ako pale, ambaye anasikia kwamba anaumwa kila akisikia jina la Uhuru Kenyatta, huyo tunamfanye one term!” Kalonzo urged the audience to support his call for a one-term presidency and expressed readiness for a direct political contest, asking, “Kwa hivyo Bwana Ruto, ikiwa ni mimi Kalonzo, itakuwa mundu ku mundu. Si lazima aende?”

These comments come in the wake of President Ruto's accusations against Uhuru Kenyatta of financing and organizing opposition politicians against his administration. On August 13, in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, Ruto referred to Uhuru as an opposition "sponsor" and questioned his record in government. He claimed that Uhuru had organized political figures to challenge his administration, saying, “Sasa ameenda kupanga vibaraka wake, anatuma hapa watu kuja kushindana na mimi. Hawa watu nitawaosha asubuhi na mapema.”
