Gachagua set to hold a meet-the-people tour in Kirinyaga County

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is scheduled to embark on a meet-the-people tour in Kirinyaga County on Sunday, August 23, 2026. This is part of the Democratic Party for Citizens (DCP) party's efforts to bolster its local support in the region. The DCP released a programme outlining that Gachagua will lead the county tour, hosted by Kirinyaga Senator James Kamau Murango and other party allies.

The journey will comprise three shopping centre stops - Kiangagana Shopping Centre in Mukure/Kianjuri at 1:00 pm, Kiangombe Shopping Centre in Kabare at 2:00 pm, and Rurui Shopping Centre in Wamumu Ward at 4:00 pm. Gachagua is expected to interact with residents and party supporters throughout the day. The DCP has urged supporters to attend en masse to welcome and express their backing for Gachagua during the tour.

This announcement follows the recent shift of Kirinyaga gubernatorial hopeful Purity Ngirici to the DCP from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), a move setting the stage for possible internal party competition ahead of the 2027 general election. Ngirici, a former Kirinyaga Woman Representative, joined Gachagua and other DCP leaders at the party's State of Ruto’s Administration address on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, where she wore DCP attire.

Ngirici's decision to align herself with the opposition came after falling out with the government, leading to her dismissal from the Kenya Seed board. Gachagua's tour in Kirinyaga County happens as he nears the end of his grassroots engagement and mobilisation activities in Wamunyoro before heading to the United States on Monday.

At the Wamunyoro home, Gachagua is also expected to host representatives from the Mt Kenya North region, which includes Isiolo and Marsabit counties. On Wednesday, August 26, 2026, Gachagua is slated to visit the Kikuyu Constituency, led by Kimani Ichung’wah, before leaving the country for his U.S. trip that evening.
