The Tigers received three prospects in return for Skubal: outfielder Zyhir Hope, right-hander River Ryan, and right-hander Brady Smith. Hope was immediately promoted to the Tigers' minor league system, while Ryan and Smith are currently recovering from injuries. Skubal's contract situation is complicated, with his agent Scott Boras expecting a record $400 million contract.

The Tigers, led by owner Christopher Ilitch and president of baseball operations Scott Harris, are not expected to pay him the amount he is looking for and opted not to extend his contract after the 2024 season.
