JKM requests increase in monthly aid for healthcare volunteers in 2027 budget

PUTRAJAYA: The Welfare Department (JKM) has requested the Finance Ministry to raise the monthly assistance for healthcare volunteers in the 2027 budget. Che Murad Sayang Ramjan, Deputy Director-General, stated that currently, healthcare volunteers receive RM500 per month, but there is a request to increase the amount to alleviate the burden of caring for patients.

"When they receive RM500 every month to care for patients, they request additional support, and we hope the government will consider this," he said. Che Murad made this statement after the inauguration of the JKM Volunteer Convention 2026. He also mentioned that JKM is seeking funding to strengthen efforts in uplifting disadvantaged groups in society.

"We are aware of financial constraints in the government budget, but we recognize the importance of supporting disadvantaged groups in our society," he added. Volunteer JKM members play a crucial role, not only in assisting the department during disasters but also serving as the eyes and ears of the government in identifying needs and challenges faced by society.

Che Murad explained that information is shared among volunteer teams, helping JKM identify needs, shape policies, and implement welfare programs. As of July 2026, there were 7,294 registered JKM volunteers, comprising 2,008 men and 5,286 women, mostly aged between 40 and 60 years. "They are as important as JKM itself. Because if we only expect everything to come from the government alone, we cannot do it," he said.

The JKM Volunteer Convention 2026 served as a platform for sharing knowledge and experiences between government agencies and non-governmental organizations, aiming to enhance service delivery to vulnerable groups. During the ceremony, Che Murad acknowledged the awards for the JKM Volunteer Excellence Award, Inspiration of the Nation, and the Best Volunteer Award and Inspiration of the State, recognizing their commitment and sacrifices in serving society.
