Australians stand with Ukraine to mark independence

Australia is marking 35 years of Ukraine’s independence with a series of nationwide commemorations to honor the country’s resilience and call for military support and sanctions. Events include festivals, markets, concerts, rallies, and special guest Lieutenant Viktoriia Savkiv, a decorated Ukrainian servicewoman. The anniversary comes amid the war’s fifth year and Russia’s ongoing invasion to exert control and block integration with the West.

Over 16,000 civilians have died in the conflict, with hundreds of thousands estimated to have been killed on both sides. Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations chair Kateryna Argyrou emphasized the importance of celebrating Ukrainian identity, resilience, and strength. Russia aims to dismantle Ukraine’s identity, language, and culture, which the community aims to protect.

Australian officials are urging the government to provide critical military assistance and address fuel sanctions that have generated over $2.5 billion for Russia.
