A new herb has emerged from Tamil Nadu’s sand dunes; here’s what makes it unique

An uncommon herb, Leucas droupadiae, has recently been found in the coastal sand dunes of Tamil Nadu, contributing to India’s botanical record. This discovery, named after President Droupadi Murmu, highlights the remarkable diversity thriving in seemingly barren ecosystems. Environmentalist Jasmit Singh Arora, also known as the "Gutli Man of India," emphasizes the significance of this find not only for its addition to scientific knowledge but also for its potential to draw attention to the fragile coastal dunes that sustain specialized plant life.

Leucas droupadiae resembles a typical herb, growing on a single unbranched stem around 15 cm tall. Its root system is distinct, utilizing shallow, web-like roots unlike the deep taproots seen in its relatives. Another unique feature is its golden-yellow fruits with dark brown spots, characteristics that aid in distinguishing it from other Leucas species.

Identifying a new plant is challenging; scientists must study a plant's entire life cycle for a year and compare it against known species in major botanical institutions. In this case, Leucas droupadiae was examined against the 155 known Leucas species to confirm its distinctiveness.

What makes this discovery particularly important is its implication for India's coastal sand dunes. Arora notes that these dunes, often perceived as barren, harbor unique life forms in poor, sandy soil. This newly discovered species thrives in conditions where few plants can survive, underscoring the dunes' role as specialized habitats for unique species.

However, Leucas droupadiae is classified as 'Data Deficient' due to its limited habitat in a small area of Cuddalore, threatened by animal grazing and the spread of eucalyptus trees. This classification highlights the need for more research to assess its population size, distribution, and threats. Efforts to protect this species include counting the plants to determine population numbers, restricting grazing areas, managing eucalyptus plantations, and establishing protected areas to safeguard its habitat.
