Democratic Party Rep. Kim Min-seok filed a complaint against Lee Jin-sook, a nominee for the Korea Communications Commission, for defamation on August 1 for calling the May 18 Gwangju Uprising a “heinous act of terrorism.” On August 1, Rep. Kim Min-seok, the spokesperson for the Democratic Party, held a press conference at the National Assembly and announced that he had filed a criminal complaint against Lee Jin-sook, who was nominated as a member of the Korea Communications Commission by President Yoon Suk-yeol. At the press conference, Rep. Kim Min-seok stated that Lee Jin-sook had made a false statement on her Facebook page on May 18, 2019, saying, “The 5·18 Democratization Movement was a riot, and there was a heinous act of terrorism in which some of the participants were killed.” Rep. Kim Min-seok also mentioned that Lee Jin-sook had expressed support for the ‘Free Korea’ movement in her Facebook posts, saying, “The ‘Free Korea’ movement was a beautiful and noble resistance movement.” Rep. Kim Min-seok criticized, “Lee Jin-sook, who spreads false information and glorifies rioters and terrorists, is not suitable to be a member of the Communications Commission, which is responsible for regulating media and communications.” In response, Lee Jin-sook’s side announced that they will “review the facts and respond.” On the other hand, Rep. Kim Min-seok was criticized by some for using extremely derogatory terms, calling Lee Jin-sook “the female Hitler.” In response to this, Rep. Kim Min-seok explained, “I used that expression because I was so angry that she was nominated as a member of the Communications Commission despite her past actions.” Rep. Kim Min-seok added, “I will be careful with my words in the future, but I think it was a necessary expression to convey my anger.” Meanwhile, the ruling People Power Party expressed its support for Lee Jin-sook, saying, “We will strongly respond to the Democratic Party’s reckless and unreasonable political attack.” The main opposition Democratic Party strongly criticized Lee Jin-sook, saying, “Lee Jin-sook, who distorts history and glorifies terrorism, is completely unsuitable to be a member of the Communications Commission.”
